South Manitou Island
South Manitou Island features many historic structures illustrating life on the water. The islands natural harbor provided refuse for ships. The South Manitou Lighthouse once guided them through the treacherous Manitou passage that took the lives of many seamen. The U.S. Life-saving Service built a Station which saved numerous others from a similar fate. Shipwreck remains are still visible around the island as reminders of the power of the Great lakes. South Manitou is also significant for its historic farms, maritime contributions and scientific agriculture, as well as some of the largest cedar trees in the world. The Manitou Island Transit in Leland ferries visitors to and from the island each day in the summer season, offering visitors the opportunity for a day trip, or an extended overnight experience.
