Haas Farm

The Henry and Maggie Haas farm was originally owned by Aaron and Julia Sheridan who settled on the property in 1867. During their time on the homestead, the Sheridan family had three milk cows, four other cattle, three swine, and produced butter and crops such as corn, potatoes, apples and currants.

Aaron Sheridan was also lighthouse keeper of the island, and continued in this position until 1878, when he, his wife and one of their sons drowned in a boating accident. George Haas then purchased the property in 1883 and it became the homestead of his son, Henry, and his wife, Maggie, who continued to raise a variety of crops on the farm. In addition to being a farmer, Henry was the island dentist, and also shoed horses using shoes made by his brother, Bill.

After Henry and Maggie died, the National Park Service purchased the property in the 1970′s. Today the site is mostly surrounded by thick vegetation, but the one and a half story house still stands in weak condition, and the ruins of a shed are also visible.
