Intro to Papermaking 2-5 pm

COURSE OVERVIEW:

You will learn the sustainable art and practice of creating handmade paper with equipment you probably have at home!  Utilizing kitchen blenders, handmade mould & deckles and recycled paper, you can create beautiful papers for your artistic practices, including collage, journaling, sculpture and more.  Students will learn the Western dip method of papermaking with recycled paper, creating a pulp mixture, pulling a sheet, couching and drying.  Time will be provided to experiment with a variety of added colorants, inclusions and textures to create unique artful papers.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Kim Bigard is a life-long learner & collector of skills.  Graduating from CMU with degrees in art & museum studies, she has worked with Art Reach of Mid Michigan since 2009 and currently holds the position of Education Coordinator.  She practices & teaches a variety of media to all ages, but focuses heavily on fiber arts. Environmentally conscious, she embraces the sustainability of fiber arts and enjoys being able to marry her love of gardening and the natural world with papermaking by including botanicals in her works.

 

REQUIRED TOOLS:

  • Required tools/materials are provided by your instructor and Folk and Field School, and will be available once the course begins

OPTIONAL TOOLS:

  • Additional recycled papers (free of plastic or staples, colored paper is fine.
  • Clean dryer lint (natural fibers only – no synthetics or pet hair)
  • Pressed botanicals if desired
