Handwork

This is a great workbee for corporate employee groups, youth groups or clubs. Volunteers are needed to keep our trails free of encroaching vegetation for hikers. And, to keep the farm fields open around historic sites. Our mowers and forestry mulchers cannot be used on steep hills or get into trails so volunteers are needed.Volunteers keep invasive and non-native vegetation from encroaching on historic properties and losing the farm fields which are important to the story of the district. They also maintain natural trails from being encroached on, such as the Bayview hiking trail keeping the thorny black locust from growing into this beautiful trail so hikers can enjoy it.

Description: As an individual or a group, volunteers will use hand-loppers to remove invasive and nonnative vegetation growing in, using  approved tools and treatment substances. You can also adopt a portion of the Bayview Trail. Removing new young growth before it takes hold is the best way to maintain the trail.

Time Commitment: One to two times a year – spring and fall.

Skill Level:  No skill needed. Ability to walk the field or the trail, bend, and strength to use the light-weight loppers is all that is required.

Tractor Field Mowing

Description: Join our mowing team! Once invasive or non-native vegetation has been removed from the fields, volunteers trained on the tractor and mower, will mow fields between April and October. Some volunteers even say driving the tractor is therapeutic! If you are over 21 and interested in being a mower, please complete a volunteer application.

Time Commitment: A minimum of 5 hours is required. Most of our mowers put in at least a few days.
