Growing the Gardens

At Preserve Historic Sleeping caring for the park’s historic places includes the cultural landscape. We are preserving and telling the story of Sleeping Bear heritage where living off the land included growing vegetable and berry produce, and flowers. We have restored some of the gardens at the historic Charles and Hattie Olsen Farm, now home of the Port Oneida Heritage Center. Plants are either heirloom, or have been approved by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as native and of the time period. These gardens enrich the Sleeping Bear Dunes visitor experience and preserve an important piece of the heritage landscape.
