SUMMARY:Exploring Indigo Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: \nLearn a bit about the different types of indigo dye and the varied sources for them. Explore techniques for folding and tying items to be dyed to create a variety of patterns. Dye a bamboo scarf (included in supplies purchased from the instructor) and one other item that participants provide. These items must be cotton\, linen\, bamboo or silk for best results. Preparing the fabric using shibori folding techniques and watching them appear on the fabric is magic. \nWith a resurgence of interest in indigo and ethnic patterning in the fashion world\, this class is sure to be a winner! The techniques are varied but simple and beautiful designs can be created in a short time. Participants can complete two projects during the class and will have knowledge to repeat the process at home if desired. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nJennifer Kelly is  lifelong fiber enthusiast. Over the years she has dabbled in many different processes. She especially enjoys knitting\, spinning\, weaving and dying. Indigo dying is one of her favorites. She is the current VP and program planner for the Northland Weaving and Fiber Arts Guild. Her membership in this guild for the past 20 plus years has given her many opportunities to experience a myriad of fiber arts. She enjoys sharing what she has learned with others and feel it is important to pass on knowledge of the fiber arts to keep them alive for future generations.  \n  \nREQUIRED TOOLS/SUPPLIES: \n\nRubber Gloves\nAn item made of natural fiber to be dyed\nA container to take wet items home\nOther required tools/materials are provided by your instructor and Folk and Field School and will be available for purchase once the course begins. Enjoy hiking through select farms\, woods and fields of the lovely Port Oneida historic region with local poet and playwright Anne-Marie Oomen. With the beautiful surroundings and oral history of the farms as your inspiration\, along with guidance and instruction from Anne-Marie\, you will have the opportunity to write and share some creative prose. \nAbout Anne-Marie Oomen \nAnne-Marie Oomen\, who received the Michigan Author Award for 2024\, is a poet\, playwright\, essayist and memoirist published throughout the country. Her nine books and individual essays have earned a variety of honors\, including five Michigan Notable Book Awards and the AWP Sue Silverman Award for Creative Nonfiction for her memoir As Long As I Know You: the Mom Book (University of Georgia Press). Her most recent collection is The Long Fields: Essays of Comfort and Home. She has taught Poetry Workshops and Life Writing at the Solstice MFA at Lasell University and Interlochen College of Creative Arts. You will learn basic leather working skills while making a small pouch-style project and also a small wallet completely by hand. \nDuring the class\, students will learn simple pattern-making\, how to mark and cut leather\, how to set up and thread a sewing awl\, and basic hand-sewing techniques for joining leather pieces together. \nEach student will receive a small tool kit to take home\, including: \n\nA sewing awl\nA scratch awl\nCloth measuring tape\nExtra needles\n\nBy the end of the class\, you will have completed two small leather projects and gained the basic skills needed to continue sewing leather\, canvas\, and other heavy materials on your own \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nI am a self taught craftsman in leather and wood. The skills I have \, come from a lifetime with tools in my hand\, and ideas in my head.\n\nFor the past 32 years of my life \, I have been owner\, manager\, and designer for the Leelanau Trading Company .
