The Pretzel class comes with a lunch of Bratwurst\, sauerkraut\, and pretzels. The marzipan class ends on a sweet note with decorate-your-own dessert. \n  \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nJeff Pavlik spent his high school years living in Germany eating pretzels. Moving back to the United States\, he completed degrees in American History and interdisciplinary Studies\, then bought a neighborhood bakery in Farmington\, Michigan. For 25 years he crafted breads\, pastries and cakes but was renowned in Southeast Michigan for his pretzels. Jeff instructs and practices historic baking and foodways at museums around the country and shares this information on his Facebook page- Old World Bread.His pretzel class was designed as a STEAM class ( Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts and Math) so expect to learn more than just how to make a pretzel! “Chef Jeff” as his students call him\, is now the Culinary Arts Instructor of the Career Tech program at Lincoln High School in Warren\, Michigan. \n  \nKim Parr is a University of Michigan graduate with over thirty years of experience in the museum field\, specializing in immersive\, hands-on interpretation of everyday life in the past. DESCRIPTION:COURSE OVERVIEW: \nYou will learn the sustainable art and practice of creating handmade paper with equipment you probably have at home!  Utilizing kitchen blenders\, handmade mould & deckles and recycled paper\, you can create beautiful papers for your artistic practices\, including collage\, journaling\, sculpture and more.  Students will learn the Western dip method of papermaking with recycled paper\, creating a pulp mixture\, pulling a sheet\, couching and drying.  Time will be provided to experiment with a variety of added colorants\, inclusions and textures to create unique artful papers. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nKim Bigard is a life-long learner & collector of skills.  Graduating from CMU with degrees in art & museum studies\, she has worked with Art Reach of Mid Michigan since 2009 and currently holds the position of Education Coordinator.  She practices & teaches a variety of media to all ages\, but focuses heavily on fiber arts. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nTwo Workshops: Linen’s Journey… Seed to Fiber and Flax Fiber to Yarn \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: \nThis  course/workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to use traditional flax processing equipment to create a “strick” of flax\, which can then be spun into linen yarn. After a brief introduction of the presenters and description of the flax plant\, the processes of rippling\, breaking\, scutching\, hackling\, and spinning will be discussed. Participants will then be provided with retted flax to physically create the clean line fiber. The program will conclude with time for conversation about and spinning of the fiber into linen yarn . \n  \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nThe Blodgett family has been involved in spinning and weaving for over 50 years. They began growing and processing flax in 1982\, and in 1983\, they started demonstration flax fiber extraction using traditional methods and equipment. In 2014\, they began teaching about flax history\, plant biology\, and the processes of spinning and weaving linen. \nTom earned a BAchelor of Science degree in Natural Resources-Interpretation from Ohio State University in 1972. He later received a master’s degree in education\, first from Xavier University in 1976 and then from the University of Phoenix in 2007. Joanne holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics-Clothing and Textiles\, also from Ohio State University\, which she obtained in 1971. \nTOm’s career includes over 30 years of experience in natural and cultural history interpretation\, along with 11 years as a high school science teacher. Joanne has been a pioneering skills teacher and fiber spinning demonstrator for more than 20 years. Her nine books and individual essays have earned a variety of honors\, including five Michigan Notable Book Awards and the AWP Sue Silverman Award for Creative Nonfiction for her memoir As Long As I Know You: the Mom Book (University of Georgia Press). Her most recent collection is The Long Fields: Essays of Comfort and Home. She has taught Poetry Workshops and Life Writing at the Solstice MFA at Lasell University and Interlochen College of Creative Arts. Her focus in recent years has been celebrating local land and water projects through writing. \nCost:  $100 per person. Small notebook journal provided. Registration limited to 15 people.
