SUMMARY:Knitting the Lakeshore: Mosaic Knitting Basics 5:30-7:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: \nA shawl is what we consider a foundation piece\, both in terms of wardrobe and within your knitting repertoire. We’re introducing a basic framework here—the ubiquitous triangle shape achieved by increasing at the edges—and showing you one way it looks fabulous (with a verrrrrry special handspun) in a simple-to-work slip-stitch pattern that reminds us of beach stones. Not sure about the hand spun yarn? You’ll achieve an entirely different look with a combination of hand painted yarn + solid or two solids/tonals for more of a checkerboard look. Never worked two colors before? Don’t fret–this is an easy-to-remember slip-stitch pattern that yields impressive results.  \nBasic knitting experience required. \n  \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nLiz Neddo is the owner and curator behind Wool & Honey\, a Michigan yarn shop rooted in slow craft\, community gathering\, and thoughtfully sourced fiber. With years of experience teaching knitters of all skill levels\, Liz creates welcoming spaces where students can build confidence\, learn practical skills\, and reconnect with handmade traditions. Their teaching style blends patient instruction with a warm\, community-centered approach inspired by life along the lakeshore. \n  \nREQUIRED TOOLS/SUPPLIES: \n\n▪ US 7 [4.5 mm] 24” or 32” circular needles \n▪ Notebook if desired \n▪ Writing utensil \nReading glasses if needed for close work\nOther required tools/materials are provided by your instructor and Folk and Field School\, and will be available for purchase once the course begins\n\nSupply Fee will cover:\n\nProject Yarn\nPrinted Handouts\n\n\n\n\n\nOPTIONAL TOOLS/SUPPLIES: \n\nN/A\n\nCOURSE DATES: \n\nJuly 10th 5:30-7:30\n\nCOURSE DETAILS: \n\nTuition: $65\nSupply Fee to the Instructor: $55

Through hands-on swatching\, knitted samples\, and guided discussion\, we’ll explore the many ways makers evaluate yarn—from durability and warmth to softness\, drape\, sustainability\, and simple joy. SUMMARY:Apple Picking
DESCRIPTION:Pick your Pleasure – U-Pick Orchards\n \nFall is here! A sweet time in the national lakeshore. You are welcome to explore over a dozen remnant orchards that produce at least 75 heirloom apple varieties. Visitors are permitted to pick up to 1 bushel per family. There is no permission needed as long as you are on park property. \nPlease do not climb the trees\, or pick fruit that is not ripe.  \nThe farms listed below have remnant apple trees that you may pick from.  Use this map to locate these. The orange dot on the map means these farms are in park ownership. Blue dots indicate private ownership\, please respect private property. \nPlease note\, some of these apples are extremely small. \n\nThoreson Farm\nBrunson Barn\nKelderhouse Farm (including newly transplanted trees from the nursery)\nBurfiend Barn\nMiller Barn\nLawr Farm\nPeter Burfiend Farm\nOle Olsen Farm\n\nOrchard Preservation Project \nApple orchards in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore were planted on the landscape in the 1800s as settlers homesteaded their properties.  These have been documented thanks to park staff\, partners and volunteers. Over 20 years ago the park’s Chief of Interpretation initiated the effort to find\, map\, and identify these antique varieties. \nSleeping Bear’s Historic Architect along with the Park’s Volunteer Coordinator have spearheaded the journey of preserving these varieties with the help of Leelanau Conservation District orchardist Tom Adams\, Port Oneida descendant Jim Kelderhouse\, and Sleeping Bear Forever whose role has been to fund the supplies for grafting\, planting supplies\, and fencing and assist with pruning. Park pruning workshops are held the first Friday of May. To sign up email Kimberly_Mann@nps.gov. To help fund the preservation\, donate here.
