DESCRIPTION:Date TBD   1:00 – 4:00 \nFor writers at any level\, but especially for those interested in creating history – inspired pieces. Explore your creative muse this fall. Enjoy hiking through select farms\, woods and fields of the lovely Port Oneida historic region with local poet and playwright Anne-Marie Oomen. With the beautiful surroundings and oral history of the farms as your inspiration\, along with guidance and instruction from Anne-Marie\, you will have the opportunity to write and share some creative prose. \nAbout Anne-Marie Oomen \nAnne-Marie Oomen\, who received the Michigan Author Award for 2024\, is a poet\, playwright\, essayist and memoirist published throughout the country. Her nine books and individual essays have earned a variety of honors\, including five Michigan Notable Book Awards and the AWP Sue Silverman Award for Creative Nonfiction for her memoir As Long As I Know You: the Mom Book (University of Georgia Press). Her most recent collection is The Long Fields: Essays of Comfort and Home. She has taught Poetry Workshops and Life Writing at the Solstice MFA at Lasell University and Interlochen College of Creative Arts. Her focus in recent years has been celebrating local land and water projects through writing. \nCost:  $100 per person. Small notebook journal provided. Registration limited to 15 people.

SUMMARY:Trees Of Change: How Pioneers Transformed the Port Oneida Woods
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n\n\nHike the forests of Port Oneida and explore how early settlers transformed the landscape from native forests into fields\, pastures\, and homesteads—and how the forest continued to shape daily life. European settlement involved taking over landscapes that had already been actively shaped and managed by Indigenous communities for hundreds of years. We’ll discuss the transition from forests to farming\, the challenges of working with poor\, sandy soils\, and the plants settlers brought with them. Learn how forests provided essential materials for cabins\, barns\, root cellars\, fences\, fuel\, and tools\, as well as seasonal sources of income such as maple sugaring and other woodland resources.  Early farm families brought plants from the places they migrated from.  We’ll see evidence of these plants changed the landscape.\n\nHike Details:\nJoin us for a scenic hike along the Bay View Trail starting at the historic Port Oneida Schoolhouse.  Climb through the red pine plantation while discovering how early settler plantings helped shape the forest we see today. Along the way\, we’ll pause to explore the stories and history behind the trees\, landscape\, and people who helped shape Port Oneida. We’ll make our way to the lookout for beautiful views\, then complete the loop or retrace our steps back to the parking area. Come ready to walk\, learn\, and enjoy the landscape!\nPlease park in the parking lot across from the schoolhouse/behind the Kelderhouse\nMake sure to keep an eye on the weather and dress accordingly!\nWalking poles and water would be a suggestion to bring as well.\nIf raining\, we will reschedule the hike to Sunday\, October 11th.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Fee: $15

DESCRIPTION:CLICK TO REGISTER  \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: \nThis beginner-friendly class will introduce you to the art of hand-sewing leather and canvas using a sewing awl. You will learn basic leather working skills while making a small pouch-style project and also a small wallet completely by hand. \nDuring the class\, students will learn simple pattern-making\, how to mark and cut leather\, how to set up and thread a sewing awl\, and basic hand-sewing techniques for joining leather pieces together. \nEach student will receive a small tool kit to take home\, including: \n\nA sewing awl\nA scratch awl\nCloth measuring tape\nExtra needles\n\nBy the end of the class\, you will have completed two small leather projects and gained the basic skills needed to continue sewing leather\, canvas\, and other heavy materials on your own \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: \nI am a self taught craftsman in leather and wood. The skills I have \, come from a lifetime with tools in my hand\, and ideas in my head.\n\nFor the past 32 years of my life \, I have been owner\, manager\, and designer for the Leelanau Trading Company . A company I created in 1994 to sell my craft work. With the process of running a business\, I have learned\, and developed unique leather working procedures\, that have helped make our business successful and thrive.\n\nI have always found joy\, and contentment in making things. And have been very fortunate\, and thankful to have been able to make a living with my hands.
