Saving the Park’s Historic Structures

Each year we have a variety of preservation projects on several of the park’s 200+ historic structures.  If you are interested in hammer-swinging, learning traditional trades such as daubing, or window restoration, you’ve come to the right place! Our amazing volunteers typically work on six projects between May – September.  Come join one of our teams!

Hammer-Swinging

Volunteer Description:   If you are interested in carpentry work, you can find a place with us! We repair barns, outbuildings, farmhouses and log cabins on the mainland and Manitou Islands. Most of our projects are group projects so you will work side by side with our friendly volunteers. Some tasks might be replacing barn or house siding; redirecting the drainage around a building; replacing and painting window trim and sills; painting; replacing a barn or cabin floor; re-chinking a log cabin, or restoring a farm fence.

Time:  Project dependent. Typically a one – three day project Thursday – Saturday. When you sign up to be a volunteer, we will put you in touch with our Project Manager who will let you know when projects are occurring.

Skill level:  We have skilled and unskilled tasks, so workers for either are welcome!  It’s an opportunity to also learn from those that have carpentry or specialized skills such as chinking

Window Restoration

Volunteer Description:   Come join our Window Restoration team gathers once a week to work to repair, strip, reglaze and repaint windows. With over 200 historic buildings in the park, this work is essential to preserving each one. Our method is one that will have long-term benefits and will never have to scrape a second time.

Time:  Tuesdays, 9:30 am – 4 pm. While it’s helpful to commit to the Tuesday Team, it is not mandatory to come every Tuesday or for the full day. Determine what schedule fits best for you! Our team has people at varying skill levels as they learn.

Skill level:  No skill necessary, We have patient leaders that will show you the ropes!
