Volunteer

Volunteers are essential to the mission of Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. We truly cannot accomplish our goals without your help. It’s a great way to serve a worthy cause, to meet other interesting people, or to just get your hands dirty repairing a building. We have plenty of tasks for volunteers to help us with! You may have only one hour a week. That’s ok. Let us know of your interest and time availability on the volunteer form and we’ll sign you up with our great volunteer team!

SPECIAL BULLETIN

We need skilled carpenters and builders who can supervise our volunteer work projects.

Do you like talking with people, are you outgoing? Be a Docent this summer!

Work Projects – Preservation projects are the essence of what Preserve is all about. We hold work bees every year that require a core of skilled and unskilled volunteers to get the job done. Come help us clear debris, hammer nails, paint or operate a brush hog! It is also essential to have qualified builders and carpenters that can lead a project. Donate your expertise and feel great about preserving our heritage. Time commitment: Often a weekend – but we can sometimes use people up to 5 days depending on the scope of the project.

Docent - The historic Olsen farm is open to the public during peak times of the year. Consider being a greeter who welcomes visitors to the house, provides basic interpretive information and answers questions. Orientation is usually in early May, and the house opens in June. Time commitment: once or twice a month in 2 ½ hr. blocks – more if you’re available. Or sign up as a substitute.

Office Work - communicating to members about events, programs, projects and financial needs is important to forward our mission. Our organization needs many hands to help with such things as mailings, registrations, and updating our scrapbook, to name a few. Time commitment: Usually about 4 hours for a mailing.

Special Events – Volunteers are needed to participate on planning committees for special events. Help plan just one event or be on a standing event committee. Or, sign up as a volunteer to help with preparations just before or during the event. Events are fun, rewarding and a good way to meet people! There is a wide range of help needed from directing parking at the Port Oneida Fair, picking up lunches for our Path to Page program, to staffing registration tables. Time Commitment: Whatever you’ve got! Varies widely.

Photography – Is photography a hobby of yours? Preserve often needs a dedicated person to snap photos of all the action taking place during projects and events. Photos are needed for grants, newsletters, website and archiving projects. Put your hobby to use! Time Commitment: Varies, but estimate three hours to cover an event or project.

Hiking Tour Guides – Funding constraints for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore interpretive staff has resulted in minimal tours of Port Oneida. As part of our goal to offer interpretive experiences, you can help us fill this gap by becoming a trained tour guide. Ability to learn facts, be enthusiastic and speak well to groups are qualities that a guide should have. Time commitment: Several hours of training plus two hours per tour.

Distribution – help Preserve spread the word by keeping our brochures and flyers stocked in appropriate businesses, stores and community buildings. Time commitment: From 30 minutes to cover your town, up to a full day to cover Leelanau County.
