Field ClearingDate: Friday, June 25, 2010 9 am - 4 pm Location: Ole Oleson FarmProject Description: Every year Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear collaborates with Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to remove invasive and non-native vegetation that is encrouching upon historic landscapes in Port Oneida. This year we will perform field clearing at the Ole Oleson Farm. Field Clearing work involves dragging cut brush into piles or to a chipper. Volunteers will not be operating the chipper. Some volunteers will also use hand loppers to cut down saplings or handsaws to cut somewhat larger trees. Our volunteers will not be using chainsaws. We then spray the plant/tree with organic herbicide to prevent future re-growth. Funders/Partners: coordination and volunteers by Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. Volunteers Needed: 10-15 general labor volunteers Supplies/Equipment Needed: We will provide gloves. Wear long pants and hard soled shoes such as work boots or hiking boots. Directions: Take M-22 to Basch rd. just west of Wheeler rd. Then a Right on Kelderhouse road. Go straight into the winding driveway back to the property. What to Bring: A sack lunch. Mowing: In a collaborative effort, PHSB donated $1000 toward the purchase of a tractor and brush hog by the Friends of Sleeping Bear. They have agreed to mow the areas that Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear has cleared for maintenance. The brush hog will also assist in pulling trees. If you'd like training on this equipment, please email us with your interest or fill out our volunteer form and indicate your interest. VOLUNTEER NOW! Go Back :: Home Page |
